Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba L., dried leaf)
The dried leaves of Ginkgo biloba contain two major groups of bioactive plant compounds: flavonoid glycosides, like quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin, and terpene lactones (notably ginkgolides A, B, C and bilobalide) (1). These phytochemicals are thought to support the body by enhancing antioxidant defences, improving micro-circulation, and influencing vascular and neuronal signalling (2).
In traditional herbal medicine, ginkgo leaf has been used for supporting healthy circulation, especially in the legs, mild cognitive support and nerve-related comfort. The European Medicines Agency assessment report additionally recognises the standardised leaf extract as a well-established herbal medicinal product for symptoms of intermittent claudication and mild memory complaints in older individuals(1).
