Horsetail (Equisetum arvense L., herba)
Horsetail refers to the dried aerial parts of Equisetum arvense, a silica-rich perennial plant traditionally used across Europe. The herb contains notable amounts of silicates, along with flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol glycosides), phenolic acids, saponins, and small quantities of alkaloids¹. These compounds have been studied for their roles in supporting connective-tissue structure, promoting healthy fluid balance, and contributing antioxidant activity. In traditional European herbal medicine, horsetail has been used to assist mild urinary discomfort, support natural diuresis, and promote recovery of minor wounds when applied topically².
The European Medicines Agency recognises Equisetum arvense herba as a traditional herbal medicinal product used for increasing urinary output and for the topical treatment of minor skin conditions¹.
