Elecampane Root (Inula helenium L., radix)
Elecampane is the dried root of Inula helenium, a tall perennial traditionally used in European and Ayurvedic herbal medicine. The root contains a characteristic group of sesquiterpene lactones, especially alantolactone and isoalantolactone, as well as inulin-type polysaccharides and essential-oil constituents (1). These compounds have been studied for their ability to support healthy respiratory function by influencing mucous-membrane activity and gentle expectoration, while also contributing antioxidant and microbial-modulating actions (1).
Traditionally, elecampane root has been used for soothing the chest, supporting clear breathing, and aiding digestion in cases of heaviness or bloating (2). The European Medicines Agency recognises Inula helenium root as a traditional herbal preparation used for temporary respiratory discomfort and digestive support (1).
