Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean) — seed/bean (powder)
Mucuna pruriens seeds are particularly rich in the amino acid derivative L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), with many samples showing concentrations around 3–6% by dry weight¹. This compound serves as a direct precursor to dopamine, which gives Mucuna its longstanding role in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for conditions such as male fertility support, nervous system disorders and “vitality” tonics². Modern phytochemical analysis has also identified phenolic compounds, saponins, trypsin inhibitors and other bioactive constituents in the seeds³.
