PHYTOTHERAPY
St. Johns Wort
Hypericum perforatum herba (flowering aerial parts) contains phloroglucinols such as hyperforin, together with naphthodianthrones (hypericin, pseudohypericin) and a supporting flavonoid/phenolic matrix.¹,² Experimental work with standardized extracts highlights hyperforin as a key contributor to antidepressant-like activity via non-selective inhibition of neurotransmitter uptake, affecting serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine, GABA and glutamate transporters in vitro, as well as interacting with certain receptor systems and ion channels.¹
EMA monograph data describe well-characterised dry and liquid extracts prepared from the aerial parts and emphasize that hyperforin-containing preparations can induce cytochrome P450 (notably CYP3A4) and P-glycoprotein, with consequences for the metabolism and transport of co-administered medicines.²
