Siberian Gingseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus)
Eleutherococcus senticosus root contains phenylpropanoid glycosides and lignans collectively termed eleutherosides (notably eleutheroside B and E), alongside coumarins and polysaccharides.¹,² These constituents have been investigated for interactions with metabolic and cellular stress-response systems, including phase I biotransformation and xenobiotic transport pathways.¹ Experimental work also shows that eleutheroside E can modulate endothelial signalling, influencing Tie2 receptor activity and nitric oxide synthase in vitro, with associated changes in lymphatic vascular dynamics observed in human and cellular models without defining clinical outcomes.²
In East Asian and Russian herbal traditions, E. senticosus has been used as a restorative tonic and was later incorporated into Soviet “adaptogen” research.¹ Contemporary pharmacognosy continues to explore how eleutherosides contribute to redox balance, immune signalling, and neuroendocrine modulation.¹
