Marshmallow Root is a soothing mucilaginous herb traditionally used for its demulcent properties - meaning it helps coat and protect irritated tissues. It is excellent for calming inflammation in the digestive and respiratory systems. Internally, it’s used to calm inflamed digestive issues such as gastritis, ulcers, acid reflux, and constipation by coating the gut lining and encouraging repair. It also soothes sore throats, dry coughs, and hoarseness by forming a protective layer over mucous membranes. Externally, Marshmallow Root can be applied as a poultice for dry, chapped, or inflamed skin, and is often found in formulations for eczema, wounds, or burns.
We also sell Marshmallow leaf, which is slightly less mucilaginous than the root but offers additional benefits due to its mild expectorant, diuretic and astringent properties. It’s frequently used in herbal teas or smoking blends to support respiratory health - helping to ease dry, tickly coughs, bronchitis, and irritation from smoke or allergens. The leaf also has a cooling, soothing effect on the urinary tract, making it helpful for urinary tract infections, cystitis, or irritated bladder conditions. The leaf is also sometimes used in formulas for IBS and leaky gut.
Both leaf and root are gentle, nourishing allies that are well-suited to anyone needing cooling, moistening herbal support—especially in dry, irritated or inflamed conditions.

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)-root (radix)
The root of Althaea officinalis is rich in mucilage polysaccharides—notably arabinogalactans and rhamnogalacturonans—along with pectin, starch and smaller amounts of flavonoids and phenolic acids¹. These mucilage substances form a soothing protective layer over mucous membranes when taken internally or applied topically, which supports its traditional usage for mild irritation of the mouth, throat or digestive tract. According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the root has a well-established traditional use as a demulcent (a soothing agent) for symptomatic treatment of oral or pharyngeal irritation and dry cough in adults, adolescents and children over 3 years old².
