Marshmallow is a wonderful demulcent herb which soothes and protects irritated and inflamed tissue, due to its high content of mucilage. The root tends to be even more mucilaginous than marshmallow leaf, making it stronger for coating irritated tissues. Marshmallow root is used for digestive inflammation and irritation in cases of gastritis, peptic ulcers, and colitis. It can help clear mucus from the body, and is also used for urinary tract inflammation. Marshmallow root can be turned into a gel and mixed with Aloe Vera to make a soothing and hydrating skin treatment.
