Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu)
Erythrina Mulungu is a tree native to South America whose bark and leaves have traditionally been used in herbal medicine as a mild sedative and calming agent. Its main active compounds are a group of tetrahydro-isoquinoline alkaloids, including erythravine and ‘(+)-11α-hydroxy-erythravine’, which laboratory studies show may inhibit certain nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain, possibly contributing to its calming and anxiolytic effects¹. Ethnobotanical surveys report its use for symptoms such as insomnia, nervous tension, mild anxiety, and occasionally high blood pressure².

This stuff is pretty awesome! My husband couldn’t go to sleep and was flat out getting 2 hours a night. The Mulungu worked within 15 minutes and he slept for 7 hours. After about a week of use, he said it doesn’t punch like the first dose did, but by then his circadian rhythm must have kicked back in because he doesn’t have trouble now at getting to sleep. I’d recommend this. Years ago, I used the bark in a decoction for back pain and it gave me 12 hours of relief. It spooked me a bit because it hits like a strong Valium within 15 minutes, but that part wears off fast thank goodness.
