Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)
Schisandra chinensis (Wu Wei Zi) is valued for its bright red fruits, which concentrate dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans such as schisandrin A–C and gomisin A, alongside triterpenoids, organic acids and volatile constituents.¹ These lipophilic lignans interact with cellular stress-response systems: in experimental models they influence antioxidant and mitochondrial pathways and modulate phase I enzymes and transporters (notably CYP3A and P-glycoprotein), thereby altering xenobiotic metabolism and cellular responses to oxidative or metabolic challenge²,³.
In East Asian traditions, the “five-flavour fruit” is used as a tonic to “secure qi,” support endurance and help the body adapt to fatigue and environmental stress, and was later incorporated into Russian adaptogen research²,³. Contemporary work continues to explore how standardized Schisandra preparations affect redox balance, hepatic biotransformation and neuroendocrine signalling, without defining specific clinical outcomes²,³.
