Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)
Scutellaria lateriflora contains a suite of flavonoids, including scutellarin, icariin-type glycosides, baicalin derivatives, and chrysin analogues, alongside phenolic acids and minor volatile constituents that contribute to its phytochemical complexity.¹,² These compounds have been investigated for interactions with GABAergic signalling and calcium channel modulation in neuronal models, suggesting neuromodulatory biochemical activity without defining clinical outcomes.² Flavonoid-rich extracts of the aerial parts have also demonstrated antioxidant and redox-associated effects in vitro, with modulation of reactive oxygen species and stress-response pathways reported in cell-based systems.¹,³
In North American ethnobotanical traditions, skullcap was used as a calming and restorative herb, typically as infusions of dried aerial tissue. Contemporary pharmacognosy continues to characterize its flavonoid profile and explore its neurochemical mechanisms while noting that controlled human trials remain limited.²
