Known as Ling Zhi in Chinese, meaning "herb of spiritual potency," Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been treasured for thousands of years as one of the world's most revered medicinal mushrooms. Often called the "Mushroom of Immortality" or the Taoist "Elixir of Life," it has traditionally been valued as a tonic to promote vitality, resilience and healthy ageing.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Reishi is considered a supreme tonic herb, supporting the whole person rather than a single body system. It is especially renowned as a Shen tonic, traditionally used to nourish the spirit, promote emotional balance, and cultivate a deep sense of calm.
As Dr Jimi Wollumbin explains:
"In traditional Chinese medicine, Reishi is considered to be a 3 Treasure tonic. Taoist health philosophy is founded on the idea that all life is comprised of 3 treasures, or energies; Jing or 'essence', Qi or 'subtle matter', and Shen or 'spirit/consciousness'. Modern Chinese Medicine texts often list Reishi as a powerful 'Shen tonic', which translates loosely to an herb that 'nourishes the spirit'. "
Although revered throughout Asia for more than 2,000 years (with some records suggesting over 4,000 years of traditional use), Reishi has only become widely recognised in the West over the past few decades. Today, it is one of the most extensively researched medicinal mushrooms, thanks to its rich concentration of beta-glucans, triterpenes, polysaccharides and antioxidant compounds.
Traditionally, and through growing scientific research, Reishi is valued for supporting:
Healthy immune function
Stress resilience as an adaptogen
Relaxation and restful sleep
Healthy cardiovascular function
Healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels already within the normal range
Liver health and natural detoxification
Healthy ageing through its antioxidant activity
Researchers have also explored Reishi's immune-modulating, antimicrobial and antiviral properties, along with its potential role in supporting healthy inflammatory responses and cellular health. While this research is promising, further human studies are needed to fully understand these effects.
Unlike herbs taken only when you're feeling run down, Reishi has traditionally been enjoyed as a daily wellness tonic. Its benefits are thought to build over time, making it an ideal companion for those seeking long-term vitality, resilience and balance.
