Hops is very useful in easing nervous tension and anxiety. It relaxes the nervous system and can aid sleep and combines nicely with the herb Valerian. Hops contains bitter principles so it is useful in cases of poor digestion and mucous colitis. Hops is a relative of cannabis and is one of the principal ingredients used to flavour beer. May also be smoked as a relaxing alternative.

Hops (Humulus lupulus L., flos)
Hops cones (the dried female flowers of Humulus lupulus) are rich in key compounds such as bitter α- and β-acids (humulones and lupulones), prenylated flavonoids (including xanthohumol), and volatile oils like myrcene and humulene¹. These plant chemicals are studied for their ability to support the body’s relaxation response, promote healthy circulation at mild levels, and contribute antioxidant activity¹.
Traditional European herbal practice uses hops for its calming properties around bedtime and for mild circulatory support². The European Medicines Agency recognises Humulus lupulus L., flos as a traditional herbal medicinal product for helping with mild sleep disorders and mild symptoms of mental stress¹.

Hops is great for the nerves and the whole body and I particularly enjoy mixing it with valerian. As a combination the flavour is quite good and makes for a great result, especially in the evening.
